Written by: Linda Ashman and Nancy Carpenter
First line: Abby's apt to argue anytime and anyplace.
Why you should read this book: This is not the first alphabet book of naughty children, and it probably won't be the last, but if it's here, now, in front of you, it's a good bet that the children in your life will enjoy hearing about other children who are way worse than them. With lots of alliteration and a simple rhyming scheme, it's a great read-aloud piece, although better suited to riling kids up than calming them down. The illustration style is great fun, mixing cartoony drawings with photographic collage.
Why you shouldn't read this book: Your kids don't need any new ideas concerning ways to misbehave.

Elphabet: An ABC of Elves
Written by: Jane Yolen and Lauren Mills
First line: A is for Acorn Elf always acrobatic.
Why you should read this book: With brief captions and delightful illustrations, here's an alphabet book for kids who want to see tiny hipster elves doing weird elf behaviors while learning their letters. Can be read straight through or examined page by page, for kids ready to identify the illustrations by their first letters. Cute and attractive.
Why you shouldn't read this book: You already know your letters and you hate cute elves.

The Dangerous Alphabet
Written by: Neil Gaiman and Chris Grimly
First line: A is for Always, that's where we embark.
Why you should read this book: I don't know if it's the most gruesome alphabet book ever written, illustrated, and distributed, but it definitely takes a note from the Ghashlycrumb Tinies. Horrid and evil things happen to a pair of vaguely Victorian children as they travel through a sewer infested with monsters and cannibal pirates and the letters of the alphabet, A to Z. Just about what you'd expect from Neil Gaiman's alphabet book.
Why you shouldn't read this book: Most kids can handle this sort of thing, but some grownups might be overwhelmed by the morbidity.

Animalia
Author: Graeme Base
First line: An Armoured Armadillo Avoiding An Angry Alligator
Why you should read this book: Base's alliterations are clever and well-thought-out, while his illustrations are luscious, intense, and intricate. Children will enjoy learning initial consonant fluency as they search the detailed pictures for familiar words; adults can't help but play along, since the pictures are complicated enough to confound the most extensive vocabularies. Quite possibly the best alphabet book ever published.
Why you shouldn't read this book: You give up easily.
